Millions everyday are being starved, but not from food, though their bones grow weak. Not from thirst though they faint. Millions today starve for justice. No one is championing their cause. Children, women and innocent men are being wronged everyday. Discouragement dries up their bones, and hopelessness causes hearts to faint in futility. They’re defenseless. I think of the thousands of children who are sold into the sex industry every week, of simply the poor whose only crime to be banished to poverty is that they were born poor.
Even in the West plenty of people hobble around their day, limping emotionally. Scars are lived through daily, scars are given daily and scars are suffered through daily. As humans we are a people who don’t know how to love well. But we all have a desire to be loved and championed for. When one goes to court they need an advocate. That quiet on the playground feels cared for when a friend steps in on his behalf and defends against the bullies. We all like to be championed for. We all want someone bigger, better, stronger, to stand in the gap with or for us.
The reality is, we have an advocate looking out for us. Not only an advocate but a lover, like a man whose wife was taken from him in the night. He will not relent to anything, until he has her back. He will cross country lines, he will travel night and day and spend every last penny until he finds his love.
So was and is the case with God and Israel (and for all those who love Him). Isaiah says “Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you…” But God doesn’t have to travel anywhere to find us, he is present everywhere. And God doesn’t have to spend a penny for services, goods or things. How does God not relent to have us back as his beloved?
“For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I give Egypt as your ransom, Cush and Seba in exchange for you. Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you, I give men in return for you, peoples in exchange for your life.”
– Isaiah 43:3-4
God is relentless in His love for you, so much that he so organizes the kingdoms of the world to work out for our good. In order to get to us, to see for our well-being, he uses other men’s lives. As God of this age, He considers entire kingdoms to be at his disposal for His good pleasure in pouring out love on us.
As his most prized possession he uses and continues to use whatever means necessary to get a hold of our lives. He loves us! He is relentless for us!
